Adrian police: Chemical emergency cleared, roads open

ADRIAN, MI (Toledo News Now) -

The Adrian Police Department says the chemical emergency at a dairy facility has been cleared, all roads are open and the shelter in place order has been lifted.

The area affected is near the intersection of East Maumee and Gulf streets.

A barrel containing 30-35 gallons of nitric acid reacted with a small amount of sodium hydroxide.

The spill was contained on site at 1336 E. Maumee. There was no immediate threat to the public, but a safety order was issued. People 1/10th of a mile from the intersection were advised to remain indoors. Additionally, roads were closed in the immediate vicinity.

Dairy Farmers of America and a hazardous materials clean-up crew are taking appropriate steps to remove the contaminated chemicals from the area.

No injuries and limited property loss have been reported.
