TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Positive gains could mean better report cards for Toledo Public Schools. The district has been trying to prepare students for the Ohio Achievement Assessment test by testing ahead of time.

Report card ratings of schools in the Buckeye State depend on how students score on the Ohio Achievement Assessment test each spring. TPS officials say they have been testing to prepare their students and have seen large jumps in all of their schools kindergarten through eighth grade.

"I think the district is heading in the right path.  I think we have been working very hard to make students the center of our focus," said Jim Gault, TPS chief academic advisor.

From testing, the district has been able to gauge student success in reading and math.

District officials say they could not be happier with improvements their students have made in the classroom.

"Our teachers are working not only harder, but smarter, and our students are on point. So I believe at the end of the year, if we continue with the progress we're making - which I  believe we will - I believe we're going to have some results we can be very proud of," said Gault.

Officials say all their elementary schools have shown improvement. Kyser Sherman and Glennwood were either at academic watch or emergency levels. TPS officials say if they test like this on the state test, they could go up letter grades on the state report card.

"What we're excited about is that we believe that with the programs we put in place - and the laser beam focus with our students and with our teachers - that we are going to see significant improvement in our reading and math, which we believe is going to uplift the district," explained Gault.

The district has tested students with the new test twice so far, and will do another round before the Ohio Achievement Assessment test.
