Inmates released early to compensate for overcrowding

ADRIAN, MI (Toledo News Now) -

A Michigan jail is releasing inmates early due to overcrowding.

Five female inmates are being released early from the Lenawee County Jail.Officials say they are not violent offenders and feel this is the best solutionfor overcrowding.

"We have 44 female beds, and we currently have 46 females in jail,"explained Captain Dennis Steenrod.

This is the first time in three years that the number of women in the jail hasoutnumbered available beds, so a local judge is granting some inmates an earlyrelease.

"They are at the tail end of their sentence," Steenrod said. "They'renon-violent misdemeants and the community would have no concerns…Bad checks…alcoholoffenses, retail fraud. Things like that."

Lenawee County residents, however, had mixed feelings about the release.

"You do the crime, you do the time. That's how I look at it," said SueLandry. "I feel they [aren't going to] learn anything from it if they get outearly."

Fred Lowe disagreed completely, saying the early release might be a chancefor the women to turn their lives around.

Above all, most people spoken to said they trust those in charge.

"I trust our court system," said Jana Schutte. "If they're not safe to bereleased, I don't think they'd be released."
