TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

City Council President Joe McNamara is putting his name into the running to be the Glass City's next mayor.

Joe McNamara officially announced his run for mayor Tuesday morning during a press conference at Fire Station 3 on Bush Street in north Toledo. McNamara wanted to remind how renovating the station would be cheaper for the city than rebuilding; it is also what neighbors want. McNamara says preserving neighborhoods will be a focus for his campaign, which is why he will also campaign for reopening the Northwest District Police Station in west Toledo.

As far as the local economy is concerned, McNamara is critical of Mayor Mike Bell's administration, saying it has done poorly at creating new jobs in the city. He feels change is needed.

McNamara has decided not to seek a third term as an at large Council member, and rather challenge Mayor Bell, Local 2058 President Alan Cox, and whoever else is deciding to run. Lucas County Auditor Anita Lopez and Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken, along with former city administrator Theresa Gabriel, are also rumored to be interested in running for mayor.

"Being mayor of Toledo during these difficult economic times is a calling, is a need, is a passion. It's a burning desire to help this community and build the best future possible. So I'm hear today to tell you, that I feel this passion in my heart, and in my bones, and I'm here to announce my candidacy for mayor of Toledo," said McNamara.

A website has been created, asking for financial contributions and leads online viewers to another site: "Joe McNamara for Mayor."
