RAWSON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A new state-of-the-art elementary school is scheduled to open next month in Hancock County. It is the first new building in almost a century and has some impressive, modern features.

Crews have been diligently working and the superintendent says the new Cory-Rawson Elementary School will open in March.

One of the most impressive features in the new elementary school is the use of technology. Every classroom will feature some sort of interactive learning tool, such as smart boards. Additionally, the nearly $13 million, 58,000 square-foot building is Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified. Sensors in the ceilings keep electricity use low and allow more natural lighting.

Big windows do more than let light inside.

"[The windows are] shatter resistant. You can shoot a hole through it, but you can't shatter the glass. It also becomes a tornado safety issue. The glass won't break and shatter and fly into the kids," explained Robert Hlasko, superintendent of Cory-Rawson Local Schools.

Another safety feature is there is only one entrance for the entire building. A hallway will eventually connect the high school to the elementary school.

"People will be able to walk into the foyer here and get buzzed in or stopped - if need be - for security reasons," said Hlasko.

The gym, cafeteria and library will be shared by the entire district. The classrooms are for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Kindergarteners have their own bathroom and water fountains inside classrooms.

"We hope this could be a draw for students to come here, as well a new building - better quality, bigger size," said Hlasko.

The district has taxpayers to thank. With the approval of a 2009 bond issue, they gave nearly $6 million.

"We really thank them for their effort and their sacrifice, and hopefully they will see that their sacrifice has been well worth it," said Hlasko.
