Falling stone closes part of Jefferson downtown

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo police have closed a one-block stretch of Jefferson Avenue in downtown Toledo after a chunk of stonework on a building at Jefferson and Ontario has fallen into the street.

"As the winds really started kicking up this morning, there was some debris that was coming off of the roof and from there some of the bricks started to come down," explained Sgt. Joe Heffernan of the Toledo Police Department.

The building housed the former Caesar's Show Bar but is now vacant. The Lucas County Land Bank obtained ownership of the building Thursday.

Last week the city of Toledo closed the sidewalk because of falling stone. Monday, they closed the surrounding road down as well.

"If somebody would get hit by a brick from that kind of distance, it could cause serious injury," Heffernan said. "We're not taking any chances with it right now."

People that walk near the building said it's concerning to see the building coming apart, but that TPD did a good job of blocking the unsafe areas.

Officials with the Lucas county Land Bank said they will be taking action to stabilize the building.
