High schoolers across the state get help with financial aid

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Last week it was Super Bowl Sunday. This week it's College Goal Sunday.

College-bound students came to Woodward High School and other locations across Ohio to learn an important lesson: How to properly file their FAFSA-Free Application For Federal Student Aid.

Waite High School Senior Eduardo Gonzalez came with his mother Delfina.

He plans to major in criminal justice at the University of Toledo and is blown away by the tuition cost.

"If I go to UT, I'm looking at $9,000 or more," he said.

Any aid will be a financial relief to Eduardo's parents.

"It will help us out. Me and my husband are both working and we get bills of our own at home," said Ms. Gonzalez.

Applying for financial help can be frustrating, especially with forms required for federal, state and institutional programs.

Students learn to navigate the ins and outs of FAFSA and how to best land that scholarship, grant or loan with the help of counselors.

The earlier you apply, the better your chances of pocketing some money.

"Once you fill out your FAFSA, the university you're applying to is able to give you more money. The money is there in a pot. Once that money is gone, you're not able to be packaged as well," said Tonya Colvert of College Goal Sunday.

Another tip: Everything is done on-line.

Students and parents need to sign-up for a government-issued pin number to get the ball rolling.

"Because if you come in and don't have those things, you have to apply for them. You can do so much of the paperwork. But you can't go any further until you sign up," said Ms. Colvert.

And if you're still confused about FAFSA, contact your high school advisor.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round. They will play the winner of the Fort Wayne and ...
