Annual paczki sale happening in Polish village through Friday

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - It's Fat Tuesday! In the Toledo area, that means paczki - and lots of it. Bakery Unlimited says it's already made 72,000 of these pre-Lenten Polish treats with no plans on stopping anytime soon.

The annual sale is going on at 3101 Lagrange St. in the Polish village area of north Toledo until they sell out. The traditional pre-Lenten treats are on sale for $13 a dozen or $7 a half dozen. Flavors include lemon, custard, raspberry and prune.

"I've been doing this approximately 13 years now, since I was 16. It's something different. It's outside the box. So it's nice to be able to carry on a tradition," said Ryan Watson with Bakery Unlimited. "This is like our playoff season. This is our most busy time. You know, between Christmas and paczki, it's nonstop."

Watson says Bakery Unlimited's recipe is very old and contains many ingredients the typical pastry would have.

"It's not just a donut. If you notice on the inside, it's nice and full, but it's not like normal bread. It's really dense. It's almost like a spongy texture. And you can see all the nutmeg in there and everything," said Watson.

Watson says the customers are great and is happy they look forward to this time of year every year.

"It gives me a sense of pride. I love the idea of being able to create something from nothing. And I know it's almost an art form in itself," said Watson.

Bakery Unlimited says the big paczki push will go until Friday, so there's still plenty of time to get your favorites. Sales will go toward community improvements in the Lagrange area.
