WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Wood County Sheriff's Office may be hiring more deputies this year due to changes in the state's retirement system, which may cause more current deputies to retire.

"It's going to fluctuate," Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn said. "We average around 10 people a year that we hire on a normal year, so we may be at 15 this year just through attrition."

If deputies that are currently eligible to retire don't by the end of this year, they may lose money for health care benefits when they eventually choose to retire.

Bowling Green State University Police are facing a similar dilemma.

"Usually we hire two or three with each selection process," said BGSU Chief Monica Moll. "The same thing is facing many other departments in our area, so if they're all hiring, we're all competing for the same pool of applicants."

Sheriff Wasylyshyn said their continuous hiring search will help them fill in for people retiring, but either way, he said Wood County is ripe with opportunity.

"It makes the job market all the better for young people getting started," he said. "They have a lot of places they can apply and a lot of opportunities they had in 2012 and 2013 that we probably haven't had since 2009."
