Partners in Education help TPS students succeed

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Under the new proposed state funding plan, the Toledo Public Schools (TPS) district won't receive extra funding until 2015, but the district still has programs in place to help their students succeed.

One mentoring program, Partners in Education, forges relationships between businesses and schools to help boost academic success through community outreach. Although no new state funding will be coming to TPS this year, the Partners say they can donate more time to help bridge the gap.

Partners in Education began in 1994, and they've recently added seven new business partners to the rotation.

Each student gets two employee volunteers that mentor and tutor them. Participants say it's a small commitment of their time, and they feel it makes a big impact.

"My belief, and our belief at Binkleman, is that there can never be too many hands in a child's life, you know, in a positive way," said Marcie Kunick, of Binkleman Corporation. "We feel that we are giving positive reinforcement to the kids."

Partners in Education is still looking for more partners to link up with schools and take an active role in student success. Any individual or business interested can visit their website here.
