Special Report Tonight: Local Farming Subsidies & Tax Dollars

(Toledo News Now) -

When it comes to farming subsidies and taxpayer dollars, WTOL 11 asked the question: Who's really getting paid? And you might not believe the bottom line.

Background:

The government gives money, called subsidies, to industries it feels serve the public interest.

The Department of Agriculture started paying farmers in the 1930's. The goal since the beginning? Keep farmers in business because the country needs them to produce food for the rest of us.

Our Special Report:

Though other areas may get more attention, Wood County is actually one of Ohio's farming hubs. So we wanted to know how many local farmers are receiving payments.

In tonight's special report, WTOL 11 obtained a list of all the farmers in Wood County who receive payments from the federal government - and found out how much they're getting.

Tune into WTOL 11 at 11 p.m. to see Craig Thomas explain why many of the people getting this money say... they don't need it.
