Sylvania Township police to get K-9 officer - News, Weather, Sports, Toledo, OH

K-9 officer coming to Sylvania Twp.

The Sylvania Township Police Department is getting some new help fighting crime, and the help has four legs.

The township's trustees just approved the reinstatement of the police department's K-9 unit along with $20,000 in funding. That will cover the cost of the dog, its training and equipment upgrades to a police car.

The department has not yet selected the dog, but it will happen soon.

The police chief says the dog will be dual-purpose and will be used for tracking and drug detection.

"We make a lot of stops out here to take a proactive approach," said Chief Rob Boehme. "You're never going to get rid of all the drugs. But to take a proactive approach, to try and to reduce that drug activity and such, we thought that a K-9 would be very useful."

The K-9 officer will also be used for teaching local school kids, even for public relations in the township.
