Fort Meigs anniversary 200 years War of 1812 battle - Toledo News Now, News, Weather, Sports, Toledo, OH

Fort Meigs celebrates 200th birthday

It was a blast from the past today at Fort Meigs in Perrysburg.

Re-enactors roamed the grounds as part of the 200th anniversary of the fort's construction.

Enthusiasts, dressed as War of 1812-era soldiers and civilians, set up a winter encampment to recreate what life was like at the fort.

Folks who showed up learned that Fort Meigs played a pivotal role in the War of 1812.

"Up until the battle here at Fort Meigs, the British army had been pushing forward straight out of Michigan, and Fort Meigs is the first battle of the war that was actually won against the British," said re-enactor, Andrew Hall.

Fort Meigs is the largest reconstructed, wooden walled fort in the country.
