Teenage accident victim remembered in Ottawa Hills

OTTAWA HILLS, OH (Toledo News Now) -

People in Ottawa Hills gathered Saturday night to remember an 18 year old teenager who died in a fiery single car crash.

The victim is identified as Brian Hoeflinger.

Brian was a senior at Ottawa Hills High School.

There was supposed to be a dance there but it was canceled. Instead, a prayer vigil was held in Brian's honor.

"Father, we ask you would comfort the broken hearts of everyone who loves Brian," said counselor Erin Wiley.

And there were more than 150 of them who gathered under the school's flagpole in frigid, snowy conditions.

Brian was a member of his school's golf team.

He transferred to Ottawa Hills after three years at St. John's Jesuit High School, touching the lives of his new classmates.

"I'll be different because of Brian, not because of the tragic accident but because of the influence he had on me," said one unidentified student.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says Brian lost control of his car early Saturday morning on Edgehill Road, smashing into a tree. The car caught fire.

He was pronounced dead at The Toledo Hospital.

The accident remains under investigation but the Patrol says alcohol is believed to be a factor.

"What happened is a tragedy. I can tell you he was a great kid, smart kid, lots of potential. Did not deserve what happened to him," said student body president Jack Tansey.

Organizers of the vigil, The Ottawa Hills Moms Club, plan to reach out to the Hoeflinger family in their time of need.

"We're putting together a big meal train for them and people are doing everything from dinners, lunches, breakfast baskets to help the Hoeflingers through this," said Carol Conlan of the Moms Club.

And the students will need comfort too when they go back to classes on Monday.

Grief counselors will be on hand to help classmates who knew Brian Hoeflinger as a high spirited, good guy.
