A clerk at Fry's grocery store in the Valley went above and beyond and has earned a loyal customer for life.
"It's what we're taught to do here at Fry's - give grade 'A' service," Jake Kunz said.
A little more than a month ago, just as Kunz was closing, Diana Kline came to the store in desperate need of help. She had severe flu symptoms and was looking for aspirin.
"He could have clocked out at 9 o'clock. He was closed, time to go home, but he didn't," Kline said.
Kunz actually spent 20 minutes reading medicine bottles with Kline and they decided she probably needed something to help open her airway. She bought it and went home.
"That night, about three in the morning, I woke up and I couldn't breathe. I yelled for my son to call 911. I just didn't think I was going to make it to when the ambulance got there," Kline said.
The paramedics later told Kline that she had pneumonia in both lungs and if she had just taken aspirin, her airway may have closed all together.
"My life! If I would have bought the aspirin, I probably wouldn't be standing here," Kline said.
"He took the time to help me. He gave me customer service," Kline said.
Now fully recovered, Kline wanted to give back to Kunz.
"I really, really appreciated that and I thought you should be recognized, so with the compliments of CBS 5, I want to pay it forward. Here's $500," Kline said.
"I had no idea how serious it was under just now and I'm glad I could be there and do what I could to help," Kunz said.
Kunz plans to use the money to fix his dented bumper and then register for school.
"How many times can you say a stranger, that somebody you don't know, cared about you, went out of their way, because they care? Not very often. So when it happens, you are like, 'Woo!'" Kline said.
Fry's couldn't be happier for Kunz but they did want to stress that the best medical advice should always come from either a doctor or pharmacist.
The night Kline came in, the pharmacy was already closed.
