Columbia gas begins $550K project in Port Clinton

PORT CLINTON, OH (WTOL) - Columbia Gas of Ohio customers in part of Ottawa County may notice construction in their neighborhood.

This week the company will begin a pipeline replacement project in Port Clinton, replacing 10,830 feet of natural gas mainlines.

A spokesperson says this a $550,000 project, five years in the making.

"We're in year five of a 20 year program to replace the bare steel and cast iron pipes throughout the state," says Jason Copsey, External Affairs Specialist for Columbia Gas. "We're replacing it with plastic pipe, which doesn't corrode as much. It's a bit easier for maintenance."

In total, the company is expected to spending $2 billion on the upgrade projects throughout the state.

Customers with indoor gas meters will also have them moved outdoors, meaning utility workers will no longer have to come into the home to take readings.

The pipeline replacement project is focused on Lindon Street, but other areas that may also get replacement pipes include portions of streets west of Maple, east of Beech, south of East Perry, and north of East State Streets.

Customers who will be impacted received a letter in the mail, explaining that construction work may temporarily interrupt their natural gas service.

"Not everyone will have an interruption of service. Those who will will be notified ahead of time, and we'll schedule a time that is convenient for them," said Copsey.

The company says this project will not cost customers any additional money.

Columbia Gas of Ohio is planning to extend the pipeline replacement project to Toledo. Officials say work is scheduled to begin on Upton Avenue sometime in 2013.

A public meeting was held Monday night at Port Clinton City Hall. Anyone who was not able to attend can receive more information and have questions answered by calling Columbia Gas of Ohio at (419) 250-4510.
