A Michigan man was taken to the hospital Tuesday after being shot in the leg in Perrysburg Township.

Det. Sgt. James Gross with Perrysburg Township police said around noon Tuesday, a special unit of Perrysburg Township Police and the Wood County Sheriff's Department were patrolling the area due to a series of home break-ins. Perrysburg Township police then received a call of a suspicious car parked near Roachton and Thompson roads, as well as activity at a few homes in that area.

"We've had approximately 20 burglaries over the past three weeks between Wood County and Perrysburg Township. So we're proactively patrolling, looking for the people responsible for our burglaries," said Gross.

When police arrived at the scene, they found James Newman, 30, of Grand Rapids, leaving a home who began running when he saw police. During a chase, a member of an unknown agency shot Newman in the leg. Police will not say who discharged the gun because the incident is still under investigation.

Newman was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries and taken to the hospital. He is expected to be alright but remain at the hospital overnight. Once he is medically able to be released, police say he will be booked into the Wood County Jail. Police have charged him with burglary and possession of criminal tools.

Police also used dogs to search a wooded area but have found no other suspects, although there could be another person on the run.
