TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Three Toledo residents say they escaped a house fire thanks to a dog named Hope.

The dog's owner was sleeping around 6 a.m. Tuesday when Hope's barking awakened him, his girlfriend and a roommate. It happened in the 1900 block of Chase Street.

"I looked out the window because she was barking so much," John Randolph said. "Then I [saw] smoke and a glowing flame, and I thought it was the house next door on fire."

Randolph said he stuck his head out the window and discovered it was his house on fire.

After the three escaped, they searched frantically around the yard for Hope but were unable to find the young dog. The owner even spoke to Toledo News Now after he thought the dog had perished in the fire.

A few moments later, however, a Toledo firefighter came walking out from behind the house with Hope. They believe she may have jumped out of a window to escape. She was limping  but otherwise appeared OK.

Firefighters believe a fallen power line may have sparked the blaze. They found the power line in the road when they arrived. The cause remains under investigation.

The inside of the house was destroyed. Randolph and the others don't know yet when they will be able to go back inside, even to get their clothes.
