'Go Red' for heart disease

In order to bring awareness to heart disease, women are asked to wear red on February 1, 2013, and a local nutritionist shares the recipe for a heart-healthy snack.

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The American Heart Association does its part every day, spreading awareness about the life-threatening effects of heart disease in the United States.

In Northwest Ohio, the organization is preparing for its 10TH annual "Wear Red Day."

The "Go Red for Women" movement is asking all women to join this year's day of awareness by wearing red on February 1, National Wear Red Day.

Heart disease is the number one killer, affecting more women than men. It's more deadly than all forms of cancer combined.

This year organizers are also asking participants to make sure that every landmark, main street, organization, and home in America "goes red."

Dr. Matt Roth joined "Your Morning Saturday" to talk about the event, and Nathan Drendel, with ProMedica, shares an easy-to-make heart-healthy snack.

"Chocolaty Nut & Cereal Crunch"

"This tasty mix contains walnuts and flaxseed, which are excellent sources of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Whole grain oats provide soluble fiber, known to help lower LDL, or "bad" cholesterol."
