Swanton School District hopes voters approve issue to build new school

SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Big changes could be on the way for the Swanton School District. Leaders say they want to build a brand new school, but they will need the community's support to do it.

Superintendent Jeff Schlade says some of the school buildings are causing problems because of their age and condition, and maintenance costs are adding up. This May, voters will decide if they should help fund a brand new school for grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.

Schlade says one way to improve the district is by moving kids out of the old building and into a brand new one.

"If you haven't been in the buildings recently, make it a point especially, to visit the middle school and see about the needs of the facility and what it takes to maintain such a facility," said Schlade.

Seventh through twelfth-grade students would attend the current high school. Schlade says if the bond issue passes, state funds will help demolish the old middle school. He believes this consolidation plan could have long-term savings.

"We found that we could save roughly a million dollars over 10 years in just energy costs alone," explained Schlade.

The bond issue the district is hoping voters approve is for $13.5 million. According to Schlade, it would cost the average homeowner about $11 per month.

Most people in the area say it is money they would not mind paying.

"With proper and thoughtful oversight, we should support education. I know it's expensive, but it's our future," said Mary Lilly, a Swanton resident.

Schlade says there will be opportunities coming up soon for residents to voice their opinion.
