Airport Highway standoff ends, suspect removed from house

A standoff in the 8000 block of Airport Highway, about half a mile east of Albon Road, has ended after police entered the house following the firing of tear gas bombs and flash bangs.

The suspect was removed from the home on a stretcher. Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. William Bower says the suspect was not shot as police entered the house, but has been taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that appear self-inflicted.

Police say the suspect barricaded himself inside the home after he was arrested for OVI and released around 9 a.m. Friday. Lucas County sheriff's deputies say the man's wife called police because he was threatening to kill himself.

An OSHP trooper on the scene said officers believe there are explosive devices inside the home. The bomb squad was called to the scene. Troopers said they believe a handgun may be inside, along with an AK-47.

Shortly before noon, the Lucas County SWAT team was preparing to make entry to try and retrieve the man from inside.

According to troopers, before 1 p.m., negotiations ended with the suspect. Toledo News Now reporter Nicole Collier said SWAT members started entering the house around 3 p.m.

Chrissey Road Elementary was briefly put on lockdown Friday morning, but that lockdown has been lifted.

Airport Highway reopened around 4 p.m.
