OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

January rain caused flooding problems for the You Lucky Dog Shelter in Oregon, and repair costs shattered their operating budget for the rest of the year.

"The sewage backed up, water backed up," said Jane Huth, of You Lucky Dog. "Everything just came up out of the toilets, out of the drains, out of the sinks."

Shelter floors were ruined, along with walls and equipment. The repair bill was quickly racked up.

"$2,300 a year is what we kind of float our boat on," Huth said. "It's a narrow margin, very narrow…and this event just ate up that margin."

The shelter has been home to hundreds of dogs over the last 11 years. They run solely on donations. Insurance covered water removal and clean-up, but not repairs, so now the shelter is stuck with paying the $1,500 bill out of the budget that is supposed to last them a year.

"Things are getting done, but it's come at a cost to this rescue in general," Huth said. "We won't have our operating fund. I mean, we will get by, we will stay open. We will continue to pull dogs."

Huth, along with Ann Schumann, said as long as there is a need, they will find a way. They are now looking to the community for help.

The shelter is accepting donations of cash, towels, blankets, as well as time. To donate, click here.
