TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As the temperatures fall to single digits this week, those who brave the outdoors are layering on coats, gloves, hats and scarves. Associates from The Kroger Co. are helping to warm those less fortunate in the community this year by donating more than 250 coats for Lucas County families in need.

Men's, women's and children's coats were collected from associates in the Kroger family from Dec. 30 through Jan. 19 in employee break rooms around the region. The new and gently used coats were donated to the Monroe Street Community Center in central Toledo Thursday morning.

"This is proving to be a snowy and cold winter compared to past years," said Bruce Umbleby, Toledo district manager for Kroger's Columbus Division. "Our associates recognize that there are a lot of less fortunate people who could benefit from their gently-used coats. We are proud that they stepped up to help keep Toledo families warm this winter."

The coats were cleaned by Adam's Cleaners, and are being distributed to children, elderly, caregivers and immobile families.

"This is a great example of how the Kroger family can partner with local organizations to make a difference. I am proud of our partnership with the Monroe Street Community Center and the number of families we will be able to reach through this coat drive," said Umbleby.
