City of Springfield activates cold weather response plan

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

If the temperatures dip to 10 degrees or below with sustained winds of 15 mph or more, the city of Springfield will activate it's emergency plan.

That plan will include putting a so-called "prevention team" out on the streets to respond to calls from both the police department and individuals to report anyone outside without adequate shelter.

The elderly and babies are particularly at risk during these extreme temperatures.

The city's health and human services department is reminding residents to wear layers, protect your hands and face and keep pets inside.

If you are using a space heater to keep warm, keep it at least three feet from anything flammable and don't run cords under carpets.
