TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – Toledo Public Schools (TPS) welcomed 18 students from China on Tuesday.

The students, along with their teachers and principal, traveled from Fushun Experimental Middle School and gathered at Old Orchard Elementary Tuesday morning.

They will spend a week at three schools in the TPS district – Old Orchard, Ottawa River, and Oakdale. They will attend classes during the day, and go on outings and to dinners at night.

The district said this is an opportunity for both schools to learn.

"Our world is getting smaller, and the global economy is now happening across our world," said Jim Gault of TPS. "It's important that we get to know each other, get to know different cultures, get to know different traditions, as we learn to expand our own."

Officials at TPS said this is a step toward being able to expand the Chinese language program at the schools.
