UT may cut part-time staff to make up for $36M deficit

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The University of Toledo is considering cutting some of its staff to make up for a funding deficit.

Officials are unsure about how many instructors will be cut because the plan is still in early stages. They say the number of part-time instructors will be reduced to make up for a $36 million deficit in State funding.

The plan is to have full-time instructors teach more. This will increase class sizes, but not a substantial amount.

"[We have] the opportunity to put ourmore senior faculty into the undergraduate classroom," Scott Scarborough, the university provost. "So there's both aneconomic reality that we are confronting and an opportunity to put more seniorfaculty into the undergraduate classrooms."

It is currently not known how many part-time instructors will be affected. A meeting will be held Thursday with faculty to discuss the plan. Changes will go into effect next school year.
