Wauseon Police Dept. to update radio system

WAUSEON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A local police department could be closer to getting new radios. The Wauseon Police Department received $25,000 in federal grants to upgrade its radio system to meet new requirements.

Police Chief Keith Torbet says some of the radios the department has been using were between 25 and 30 years old.

Starting this year, the FCC is requiring police departments to "narrowband" all of their radios, which means they will have to operate on about half the megahertz cycle they already are. This in turn, will open more channels and make communication more reliable.

Torbet says this grant is a huge help because the new FCC requirement has been hard to meet.

"It's a problem for smaller agencies - even bigger agencies who have thousands of radios - getting all of these narrowbanded and getting them to work," said Torbet.

The city has about 100 radios among the police, fire and public works departments. According to Torbet, this grant covers most of them, however, they may have to dip into city funds to upgrade a few.
