TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Bowling Green State University students celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. by taking on a challenge.

This is the fifth year that BGSU has called on students to do something for others as a part of the MLK Day service challenge.

Participants say it is not a day off, but rather, a day on to pay forward the sacrifices made by King and others.

"We could have slept in. We could have made it a three-day weekend. But we decided, no, we're going to get up Monday morning, and we're going to give back," said Paige Schaefer.

Many years ago King spoke of a dream that would unite communities. Decades later, people around the nation are rolling up their sleeves, braving the cold, and working to make sure that the dream is realized for the national day of service.

"When people come together, it's always a great thing. But when they do something good, it's even better. I think Dr. King would be very proud of us," said Tyler Verhoff.

Students were split into teams early Monday morning. They say the goal to take King's dream to new heights was there from the start.

"We're really a part of history. We really get embedded in what's going on. It's the kind of thing that we can tell our kids and tell our family about, that we were there that day serving the community," said Adriana Darris.

Some volunteered at the Believe Center working on outreach in the community. Others worked beside an Eagle Scout earning a badge by completely renovating a room in the Catholic Club ceiling to floor.

It was a big undertaking, but Eagle Scout Joshua Szymanski says the big sacrifice made by King and others deserve a big effort on his part.

"Becoming an Eagle Scout shouldn't be easy. I didn't want to do anything easy that you could get it over with in a week. I wanted to do something that could really help somebody," said Szymanski.

This year's Race for the Cure in Findlay is taking place right in the middle of a September heat wave. Temperatures at race time will be in the 70s. By midday expect temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s under bright sunshine. This would be a hot and oppressive day right in the middle of summer, let alone in late September.  Be sure to prepare for the conditions by drinking plenty of fluids and considering wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
