Local organizations team up to honor MLK Jr's message

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Northwest Ohioans have been celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day in various ways. One local kitchen decided to fuel King's vision through food and fellowship.

The MLK Kitchen for the Poor has been serving meals to Toledoans in need for more than 40 years. Together, with the Lo Salem Church, it has been providing a special meal and message on MLK Day each year.

Monday's festivities kicked off with song during a church service at Lo Salem Church. Afterwards,  volunteers prepared and served a meal at the MLK Kitchen for the Poor.

Organizers say this day is not meant to be a day to sit down, but to stand up and serve everyone, which is how King would have wanted it.

"It's not a day off, it's a day on. And it kind of inspires people to get out and to do things in their community. Everyone has a responsibility to give back. It's not just one person or organization's responsibility. It kind of motivates people to get out and want to do more," explained Erica Parish, with MLK Kitchen for the Poor.

According to organizers at the kitchen, they try to move King's dream forward every day through service. They serve around 200 people daily and Monday was no exception.
