BGSU to cut 100 faculty for fall

BGSU is looking at faculty cuts for the fall. BGSU is looking at faculty cuts for the fall.

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) – Bowling Green State University (BGSU) officials have decided to reduce university staff by about 100 this fall.

Many faculty members and students have expressed their displeasure at the decision.

BGSU representatives said they are basing their staffing level needs on students' interest and their area of study.

In an official statement, they said:

"Our priority is ensuring the success of our students, and we are constantly evaluating staffing to meet their needs and operate as efficiently as possible. This will not impact the quality of a BGSU education or a student's ability to graduate on time."

Faculty members, however, disagree. They said students will lose about 800 classes because of the cuts and class size will be affected.

"We know that small classes are something that students benefit from," said Associate Professor David Jackson. "We know that small classes offer professors the opportunity to have more interaction with their students, to get to know their students, to have more writing assignments, to have more experience with the students so we can write better recommendation letters about their actual strengths. Everyone agrees that smaller class sizes are the key to a quality education."

The university said cuts are being made from attrition, retirements, and the expiration of 1-year contracts.
