OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) – A meeting was held Thursday night for parents, police, and Oregon school officials to discuss school safety.

The school already has a safety plan in place, which includes locked doors, security cameras, and three school resource officers, but officials are considering altering it after the Sandy Hook shooting.

Parents learned about "ALICE" – Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evaluate.

"Each one of those concepts has separate training sessions and our school resource officers have done an excellent job over the years of teaching periodically to teachers and students," said Oregon Police Chief Mike Navarre.

Parents at the meeting recognized that there is no such thing as perfect security, but they applaud the school for being proactive in adopting the ALICE program.

"I'm very proud of the school system," said Jamie Campbell. "I'm proud they are going above and beyond what they currently have in place."

And Superintendent Mike Zalar explained some of the improvements the school is looking into making.

"We're looking to maybe add some additional security cameras, beef up security provided at elementary schools, and add a buzzer system because we don't have one," he said.

One thing Zalar and chief Navarre agreed on: School staff members should not be armed.
