Henry County officials review school safety procedures

HENRY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A major push is under way in Henry County to make local schools safer. The superintendent of Patrick Henry Schools met with local police chiefs, the sheriff, and security experts Thursday, spending hours touring the schools and reviewing current safety plans.

Some of the schools already have security cameras and key card entries in place, but now leaders want to know what else they can do to keep kids safe.

Step by step, officials walked the halls of each and every school in the district with one question in mind:

"What can we do to improve our safety precautions that we're following?" asked superintendent Thomas Taylor.

The group looked at entry ways, back doors, emergency exits, security cameras  and locks.

"In light of some of the events that have been occurring across the nation, we thought it was an appropriate time to review our safety plans," explained Taylor.

Something both those with and without kids can agree upon.

"We want to be proactive. We want people to know that we're going to try and handle any situation that may occur here and we want to be ready for it if it does," said Henry County Sheriff Mike Bodenbender.

After the tours were complete, the group sat down and discussed their findings. Officials say they hope to put some changes in place and do whatever they can to improve school safety.
