Semi leaks pesticide after Turnpike crash

FULTON COUNTY, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports no one was seriously injured after a semi hit a pickup truck on the Ohio Turnpike near Wauseon. The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Fulton County near milepost 34.

Valdimir Losich, 32, of Lake Zurich, IL, was driving a Ford pickup truck with a flatbed car trailer holding three salvaged vehicles. He was in the westbound lane when he began having engine problems and slowed down. A semi-tractor hauling a box trailer with liquid pesticide then crashed into the pickup truck, went off the left side of the roadway, and hit a guardrail. The driver, Gregory Cannon, 61, of Defiance, OH, overturned across the westbound lanes and the trailer started leaking the liquid pesticide.

An undetermined amount of hazardous material and diesel fuel was leaked at the scene. The Ohio EPA was contacted and responded. A local hazmat contractor was also called for the cleanup effort.

The westbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike were closed for approximately seven hours for cleanup. All westbound traffic was diverted off the Delta Interchange at Exit 39.

Both drivers were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Losich was uninjured. Cannon was extricated and transported to a local hospital, and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
