Heavy rainfall and severe weather possible this week in ETX

We are watching a storm system developing over the SW United States and NW Mexico that will have a MAJOR impact on our weather beginning tomorrow and continuing through early Thursday morning.

The main issue will be very heavy rainfall as well as a chance for severe weather. The severe weather threat will likely remain south of I-20 and most likely south of HWY 79 as the low moves northeastward into East Texas on Wednesday.

As the low moves in, a warm front will move northward with it and the atmosphere along and south of the warm front is where most of the severe weather will likely form.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT RISK for severe weather for the southern half of east Texas from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning.

We will have to watch the path of this storm very closely because on the eastern side of the low pressure, storms will probably be severe with gusty winds and even an isolated tornado. We will be watching the position of the warm frontal boundary, which is where most of the severe weather is likely to occur. In addition to the potential for severe weather, very heavy rain appears likely Tuesday night through early Thursday morning. Rainfall totals of 2.00" to 5.00" are possible...along with some locations getting even more than that.

Another cold front late Saturday and early Sunday should give us more rain.

We could be dealing with areas of localized flooding this week as well. Everyone across East Texas needs to pay close attention to the forecast this week, as weather will have a major impact on daily plans. Friday should be calm, but quite warm for January. Highs will be in the upper 60s to near 70. The cold front on Saturday/early Sunday is likely to deposit some colder air back into ETX for the following week. Stay tuned!
