A common cosmic alignment is among the events that doomsday predictors claim will lead to the cataclysm that alarmists say will end the world on Dec. 21.

Astronomer Andrew Frakoni points out that the so-called alignment of the Earth, sun and center of the galaxy takes place every year about this time.

"…Late December, is the time that every year the center of the Milky Way galaxy is behind the sun, so the Earth, the Sun and the center of the Milky Way galaxy kinda, sorta line up in late December every year," he said.

The same thing has been going on for millions of years without consequence. The enormous distances between our celestial neighborhood and the center of the galaxy makes it impossible for any physical forces to lead to a an all-destroying event in our neck of the woods.

"The notion that something at the center of the galaxy could cause doomsday on Earth … is a complete misunderstanding of how truly astronomical the distances are between us and the center of the Milky Way," Yeoman's said.

The impending shortage of Twinkies is another story.
