South Toledo residents should get natural gas service back Wednesday evening

Columbia Gas says about 600 of the 1,100 people who lost natural gas service in south Toledo Tuesday have seen it restored. The affected area is bound by Byrne Road, Glanzman Road, Detroit Avenue and Schneider Road.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Columbia Gas says about 600 of the 1,100 people who lost natural gas service in south Toledo Tuesday have seen it restored. The affected area is bound by Byrne Road, Glanzman Road, Detroit Avenue and Schneider Road.

Crews began restoring service at 8 a.m. Wednesday and are still going door to door turning on the gas. Crews need access to homes to restore service, so if residents are not there, they will leave a tag on the door with a number to call for their return. Officials say crews will continue to work until all of the gas has been restored for customers.

There was no gas leak. Columbia Gas says the outage was caused when a regulation station failed to meet increased need. The failure caused pilot lights to extinguish on household appliances in the area.  Officials say the outage is not related to Hurricane Sandy.

Gas service has been shut off to the area, and crews worked into the night to begin restoring service. First, they had to shut off gas to every home in the area. Then, they had to fill lines with gas and begin going door to door to restore service and light pilot lights. If customers are not home, crews had dig to shut off the gas line at the curb.

Columbia Gas has called in employees from Findlay, Columbus and Cleveland to help with the outage. All Columbia Gas employees carry photo identification.

Affected customers are asked to call Columbia Gas and report the outage. Columbia Gas may be reached at 1-800-344-4077.
