UTMC's heart pump program saves 8 lives

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – Eight lives have been saved since a new heart pump program launched at the University of Toledo Medical Center last year.

The pumps are an alternative to having a heart transplant or a temporary solution while a patient waits for one.

One of those survivors is only 23 years old. The mother of two started feeling sick after her second daughter was born and found out her heart was failing.

Doctors told Kaitlyn Davis her heart was only functioning at 5 percent.

"She probably would have survived a few months, but it would have been unlikely that she would have seen her children grow up," said Mark Bonnell, M.D., assistant professor of surgery at UTMC.

Thanks to a heart pump, Davis has made it more than a few months and her heart is growing stronger every day.

The device is surgically placed in the patient's chest, helping the heart pump blood to the rest of the body. Davis is just one of eight people in northwest Ohio who have undergone this treatment at UTMC.

Now Davis' heart is functioning at 25 to 30 percent and doctors say she might be able to have the pump removed completely within the next year.

"Words don't even describe how grateful I am for this technology," said Davis.
