Romney emphasizes rumor of Jeep production leaving US

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A comment by Mitt Romney during his campaign speech in Defiance on Thursday is stirring up some controversy.

"I saw a story one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking about moving all production to China. I will fight for every good job in America. I'm going to fight to make sure trade is fair and if it's fair America will win," Romney told the crowd at Defiance High School's football stadium.

Romney references a story posted on Monday by Bloomberg about Jeep production possibly resuming in China, and that story received interpretation on the Drudge Report website.

Chrysler released a statement: "Bloomberg recently produced a story that led some to incorrectly believe all Jeep production could shift to China from North America. That is not true. Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China."

UAW Local 12 President Bruce Baumhower calls it an attempt to discredit the success of the auto recovery.

"Chrysler's not spending a half billion dollars in Toledo to build a plant that'll have capacity to build 450,000 cars a year and not fully utilize that facility,"said Baumhower.

UAW Local 14 President Ray Wood says he's not surprised Romney said what we said and where he said it, in Defiance where more than 1,200 people work at the GM Powertrain foundry.

"Mitt Romney knows he has nothing to say to northwest Ohio when it comes to the livelihood and the pride we have here in Toledo for what we do," said Wood.

Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken calls it an act of desperation.

"Governor Romney's going to pull out all the stops. He's losing in Ohio, he knows he's losing in Ohio," said Gerken.

Attempts to receive clarification from the Romney campaign have not been successful.
