Thieves break into 64 apartments at west Toledo complex

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A Toledo apartment complex is on edge after dozens of apartments were broken into and stripped of copper and more. The thefts were reported Thursday night at the Riviera Maia Apartments in west Toledo.

Police say maintenance estimates that 64 different apartments were broken into at the complex. The end result was a lot of damage and a lot of money lost.

"The crime rate around here is ridiculous, and this apartment complex is bad. The crime rate is really high. So it's very scary, and it's alarming," said Michelle Moore, a Riviera Maia resident.

Moore first heard about the break-ins a day after they happened. Even though the police report says the units were all vacant, she still feels uneasy.

"I have three kids, and I know there wasn't anyone in the apartments, but heaven forbid if they went to one that did have somebody in there," said Moore.

Police say the thief or thieves forced their way into the units and stole copper piping, brass and furnaces. The thefts left pricey damage to walls, doors and windows.

With an estimated 64 units broken into, Moore cannot believe no one heard commotion.

"You can hear everything. So it's amazing that they went under everyone's nose," said Moore.

Police agree and say it is a time-consuming crime. They want neighbors to keep their eyes peeled.

"A lot of times people feel, 'Oh, somebody has a truck backed up to that house. Maybe they're fixing it up to sell it.' Well, maybe that's what's happening. Maybe they're stripping it," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department.

There are no leads in the case so far.

Police will be checking with scrap yards to see if the metal has turned up, but say a call to the police can help catch people in the act.

"If you see something like this going on, we have a pretty good chance of catching them, because a lot of times they're there for a little while," explained Heffernan.

Riviera Maia Apartments said they would return Toledo News Now's calls but have not yet, nor have they answered more calls.
