BGSU campus group holds open discussion on recent crimes

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) - Bowling Green University's Black Student Union held an open discussion Thursday on the hate crimes that occurred on campus.

There have three recent incidents involving hate crimes. The event in particular that upset many was the incident that involved head basketball coach Louis Orr and the drawing of a swastika and phrase "white power" on the sidewalk in front of his home.

One day after the incident involving Orr's home, another Bowling Green resident, also African American found watermelons smashed on his car.

Incidents like these that are determined to be hate crimes call for the need for open discussions.

Students and staff were able to open the lines of communication on what it means for African American professors to be more visible on campus and to be mentors to students.

"It was addressed, but it was addressed an open letter to the community. It wasn't addressed properly. It should have been sent to every student, every staff in email letting them know what happened and that it will not be tolerated. We had to search for the information which really upset us. It was in the back of the newspaper and it was on zoom news but, then it didn't have a correct title you know, addressing exactly what happened so a lot of students are kind of going on off of hearsay so we're definitely going to correct it tonight," said Cierra Henderson member of the Black Student Union.

Members of the Black Student Union wanted all of the recent hate crimes to be addressed and treated the same way other incidents on campus were addressed.
