Grant allows for new bridge to be built over Maumee River

NAPOLEON, OH (Toledo News Now) - Napoleon County received $250,000 in grant money to build a new bridge over the Maumee River.

"There's a lot of traffic congestion on our current river bridge," said Patrick McColley with the Henry County Transportation Improvement District.

The river separates the new US- Route 24 and a major industrial area where the Campbell's Soup Company is located.

To get from US-24 to the industrial area, truckers have to drive through downtown Napoleon to get to the bridge.

"The trucks is the biggest thing, we don't really want a lot of those trucks going to Campbells going through Napoleon," said McColley.

Neither do local business owners.

"Alleviating the truck traffic in downtown might open it up to more shoppers," said owner of Tammy's Tack Store Tammy Schmidt.

The idea of building a second bridge has been discussed for a while but thanks to this grant there is new momentum behind the effort.

"This $250,000 grant is just a small piece of the pie but it is important to move this project forward and get it to a shovel ready phase," said McColley.
