Home Depot awards grant to legion for facility upgrades

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A local American Legion Post will soon be able to serve more people and offer more scholarships thanks to a grant from Home Depot.

Leaders at the American Legion Post 587 say their building was in desperate need of a facelift. Thanks to the grant and help of volunteers Thursday, that update is under way.

Organizers say the post was selected to receive the grant because of the number of people the organization has helped over the years.

"For every veteran that walks through here, walks through this legion with their family - not just the family that they're married to or [have] given birth to but - they walk back into the military comradery and can now walk in here and can now feel more at home," said Lianne Whitaker, past commander at American Legion 587.

According to organizers, the grant will provide an opportunity to use money raised on its own to further its efforts in creating a community center for kids, adults and veterans, without having to worry about funding, such as for new flooring or a kitchen update.

"This helps us sleep a little better at night. I'm not the kind to join the military, so I appreciate these guys so much that give up their life, their time for our country," said Rodney Harris, Home Depot store manager.

The hall is used by more than just veterans. Junior football teams, high schoolers and neighborhood block watch groups also use the facility.
