Rossford schools being examined for condition assessment

ROSSFORD, OH (Toledo News Now) - School facilities in Rossford are currently being examined to determine what improvements need to be made.

It is all part of a four phase plan proposed by a committee made up of community members.

The Rossford School Board last week approved the hiring of Garmann-Miller architect/engineers to assess their buildings.

It is phase two of a four phase plan brought together by the master plan steering committee.

"We know the buildings have a lot of deficiencies in them and what they're going to be able to do is go through and specifically identify where everything is lacking and what the cost would be to take them up to having them function as a modern day facility," John Appt with the Master Plan Steering Committee.

"Some of the things that we're seeing are nine by nine tiles which typically is a sign of asbestos tile, some of the HVAC systems that need some work and also the electrical systems there's some signs of work needed on that as well," said Brian Wolf with Garmann Miller

One big problem for the junior high is the roof.

"Definite signs of wear and tear on here. In our assessment that we do we'll put in there that our recommendation would be to replace the roof if the building gets renovated," said Wolf.

Garmann-Miller will do a conditions assessment on all buildings followed by a needs assessment. They will report their findings in a public forum early next year.

In 2010 voters turned down a 5.9 mill levy that would have built new facilities.

"What we're hoping when we come up with the final plan, which will be presented in May, we might be able to cover most of the costs without having to go to a levy," said Appt.

There will be a public information meeting on Tuesday the 30th at 7p.m. in the high school auditorium where the committee will go over what has been done and what is yet to come in the plan.
