Residents voice concerns over Fire Station 3's closure

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Neighbors in north Toledo are raising concerns about the future of the former Fire Station No. 3 at Erie and Bush.

Tandelaya Bailey, who lives on Bush, says for the past eight years the station has represented a safety blanket for her and her family.

"Having the firefighters, it helps with our safety plan, the children know where to go in case there's a fire. To have that missing, it's going to be hard on the kids," said Bailey.

Jerry Bradford lives on Ontario Street and says the station closing has yet to sink in.

"It's a nice fire house, I've relied on that service for the longest time," said Bradford.

Toledo Fire and Rescue cites a crumbling concrete floor as reason to relocate an engine to Station 13 to respond to calls, as city leaders are exploring options, including building a new fire station at Jamie Farr Park. Neighbors are hoping city leaders will consider the option of reopening the station at Erie and Bush.

"I think they should put money in and rehab it. It'd be a lot cheaper than a new fire house," said Bradford.

Bailey agrees and says it's needed in the area.

A community meeting regarding the fire station is taking place Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at Chestnut Hill, located at 1127 Champlain St. Council is holding a committee hearing Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. at One Government Center.
