State ranks TPS on academic watch

(Toledo News Now) - Toledo Public Schools are taking a step in the wrong direction, according to the state of Ohio. Other school districts around northwest Ohio are not ranking as poorly.

The district has ranked in the Academic Watch category. It has not ranked at this low level since 2006. Since then, it had been labeled Continuous Improvement.

Twelve schools within the district met the marks to be considered Effective or Excellent. Nineteen received Continuous Improvement. Eighteen are considered Academic Emergency or Academic Watch.

Martin Luther King Jr. Academy for Boys seems to be the exception for the district.

"We were academic emergency. We skipped two levels the first year that we became all boys. Then the second year we become all boys, we skipped another two levels," said Principal Willie Ward.

"I think all the hard work they put into it and the support of their parents and the support that we have at school," said teacher Janice Arkebauer.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed. We did drop to what we call academic watch, and it is not something I'm accustomed to," said TPS Superintendent Dr. Jerome Pecko.

In Lucas County, Anthony Wayne, Springfield and Sylvania all ranked Excellent with Distinction. Maumee, Ottawa Hills and Washington Local ranked Excellent. The state calls Oregon Effective.

In Wood County, Perrysburg and Eastwood are both Excellent with Distinction. Bowling Green, Elmwood, Lake Local, Rossford and Otsego ranked Excellent. North Baltimore and Northwood are ranked  Effective.

In Hancock County, Findlay rated Effective.

These results are preliminary. The Ohio Department of Education will release its official report cards once the investigation into the manipulation of school data is complete.

Dr. Pecko said they are not going to panic. TPS is continuing the transition plan put in place last year and said  research proves they will see improvement because of it.

Check school and district report cards and ratings, review historical data, and make comparisons between districts of similar make-up.
