SANFORD, FL (RNN) – The murder trial of George Zimmerman has been scheduled to start June 10.

Circuit judge Debra Nelson set the date at a six-minute hearing Wednesday. Zimmerman, a 29-year-old self-appointed neighborhood watch captain, was charged with second-degree murder for the shooting of Trayvon Martin, 17.

After the hearing, the defense team for Zimmerman tweeted a "self-defense immunity hearing" would be requested for April or May. The court scheduled another hearing on the case for Friday, where it will determine whether the defense can subpoena Martin's school records.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara has formally asked the judge to delay the case, according to the Orlando Sentinel. He said he did not know when they would be ready for trial.

Neither Zimmerman nor his wife appeared in court; both are in hiding in Seminole County, FL, the Sentinel reported. Shellie Zimmerman, 25, has been charged with perjury based on statements she gave at her husband's bond hearing, when she said they were broke.

Her next hearing was scheduled for Dec. 12. Prosecutors assert the family had made more than $100,000 from a website asking for funds for George Zimmerman's defense.

On Feb. 26, Martin was on his way home from a store when he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. The neighborhood watch captain claimed he shot Martin in self defense after a fight broke out between the two, and he was not charged with a crime for several weeks.

The shooting brought national attention to Zimmerman and Florida's "stand your ground" law, which allows people to use deadly force if they feel their life is in danger.
