Massive east Toledo duplex fire labeled suspicious

TOLEDO, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - There are no injuries, but one man is left homeless after an overnight fire in east Toledo.

Firefighters were called to a duplex fire in the 400 block of Parker Street near Starr Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The duplex was vacant, and neighbors say it was actually scheduled to be torn down. They say it has caught fire several times in the last year. The blaze was so intense with flames reaching over the treetops, that it quickly jumped to a neighboring home.

Mike Jacobs, a friend of the resident whose house was burning, saw the fire spread and ran into the burning house to make sure his friend was OK. Resident Ross Ortiz was not home at the time, but Jacobs managed to save the two dogs.

Ortiz says he is grateful for and admire's his friend's heroic actions. Although what Jacobs did was very courageous, firefighters want to remind the public that it is not a good idea to run into burning buildings. They say the safest thing to do is leave it to the fire crews.

Ortiz is now trying to figure out what he will do next.

"I lost everything. Everything's gonna be water damaged, everything's gonna be ruined. I don't even know what. I don't even want to take a walk in there. I'm more upset about all the memorabilia that's gone," said Ortiz.

Demolition crews had to tear down the vacant house where the fire started. The neighboring home is still standing but firefighters say it is currently not in livable condition.

The fire is being investigated as suspicious. The cause is not yet known.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round. They will play the winner of the Fort Wayne and ...
