Students, Civil War group honor veterans at west Toledo cemetery

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Haughton Cemetery is the smallest cemetery in Toledo.

You've probably driven by it at the corner of Secor Road and Central Avenue and not even noticed it.

The cemetery has quite a history to it.

Eight Civil War veterans are buried here, but not many people knew that until Sunday.

That's because the soldiers' graves had no markings recognizing service to their country.

That's no longer the case, thanks to the group Greater Toledo Civil War Roundtable, organizers of a Cemetery Walk ceremony.

Sixth graders from Navarre Elementary School raised $400.00 for the G-A-R markers, which stands for Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War Veterans organization.

"I wanted to learn more about the Civil War and how it happened and who helped end it," said student Maston Jacquillard.

Watching the ceremony was Lois Webb.

Her great, great, great uncle is buried at the cemetery.

That would be Ira Haughton, a member of Company 1 of the 130th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Lois came for one reason.

"Remember that they fought for our freedom," said Ms. Webb.

At each grave site, the soldier was remembered and flowers were placed by a woman dressed in black known as the 'lady in mourning.'

"150 years ago, these men gave a tremendous sacrifice for our country. And to not have any recognition is very sad. We wanted to change that," said Robyn Hage of the Roundtable.

And that they did on a rainy afternoon in Toledo's smallest cemetery.
