City to hold meeting Tuesday about Secor Road construction

TOLEDO, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - A major construction project is in the works for portions of Secor Road in west Toledo.

The stretch that runs from Central to Monroe is in such poor condition, crews will be rebuilding it from the dirt up. The big undertaking will last months and certainly have an impact on businesses and homes in the area.

City officials say they wanted to hold a meeting to help those who will be impacted by the construction project by giving them details and tips on how to keep customers coming their way.

Many people believe this project is necessary and some say this portion of Secor is a perfect place to start. Christal Hughes lives on a residential road off Secor and thinks the construction project will bring good things.

"It should open up our area to more economic development and growth and people around here need jobs, so with better roads, hopefully more people will want to be involved around and people will want to live in our area," said Hughes.

Those in Toledo's engineering department know not everyone will feel that way. They understand people will be excited about a new road, but business owners will be concerned about sales.

During the project, traffic will be reduced from two lanes in each direction with a turn lane to just one each way.

Commissioner of Engineers Robin Whitney says they will be able to share strategies with concerned business owners in a public meeting and give them tips on how to keep their customers coming. The department hopes those business owners can look at the project the same way Hughes does.

The project is scheduled to start in February 2013 and last until November.

Interested residents can learn more about the rebuilding of a final portion of Secor Road at a public meeting Tuesday night. Toledo city leaders will be at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Secor located north of Sylvania Avenue. The meeting runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
