TPS enrollment numbers down

Enrollment numbers are down in the Toledo Public School district. School leaders have released the results of their student head count.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – Enrollment numbers are down in the Toledo Public School district. School leaders have released the results of their student head count.

The student head count is required by the state of Ohio every year. TPS always does its own count at the beginning of the school year to get an idea of what it will be reporting to the state. The count was done the first week of September, which was also the first full week of school.

District leaders found that enrollment dropped once again, this time by about 800 students compared to last year. The schools with the highest declining enrollments were Waite High and Marshall Elementary.

Growth was seen in Toledo Early College High School and Toledo Technology Academy, as well as Navarre Elementary.

District leaders say the decline is mainly due to Toledo's shrinking population. Every year, Ohio bases how much funding it will give to districts on enrollment, so Toledo would get less from the state.

The "official" state head count will be Oct. 1 through Oct. 5.
